The writer wrote a character
he didn’t like at all.

He put him in a corner
and then up against a wall.

He gave him a dilemma
and he forced a bad decision,

he wrote him with a flaw
that made him say things with derision.

The character would spit and cuss
and treat the others badly.

His disposition made the reader
see the others sadly.

And therein was the purpose
of this character he wrote:

to give the story conflict,
emphasize and to denote…

the difference in right and wrong
and character divide,

so we could see which ones to like
and which ones to deride.

So, in the end, this character
is not really so bad.

It’s that he had a job to do;
he had to make us mad.

He showed us where to draw the line,
revealed the moral arc,

he helped the reader find the light
by showing us the dark.
