The Earth has a tilt; a remarkable thing,
without it we wouldn’t have Summer or Spring.

About 23 degrees give or take a small fraction,
the change in each season caused by orbital action.

As we go ’round the sun I’ll illustrate with a clock,
the positions of Earth aren’t really a shock.

Let’s start with the Earth at the position of six
and the sun in the middle with some space in betwixt.

The Earth is at six and the top leans away,
the people up north have a wintery day.

As the sun orbits ’round into position at three,
the tilt doesn’t change which is cool you will see;

we point to the north star, Polaris the one,
and now the whole earth gets some time with the sun.

Our facing is neutral and things even out,
the north of our planet is springing things out.

Next we continue to the twelve on the dial,
and for a good reason the north gives a smile;

with the tilt still pointing toward the same spot,
the top of the earth gets more sun and is hot!

Summer is here for the north but we’ve found,
the earth and its orbit will keep going round.

So off we go to a reversal of season,
our position is nine and this is the reason:

the tilt is the same as it always will be,
but at nine we are neutral just like when at three.

For the north this means that the leaves will all fall,
and it’s interesting to note it’s not the same for us all;

The southern hemisphere has been along for the course,
but each of their seasons is the opposite of North’s.

By the time that we make it back down to the six,
we’ve had a full year of Earth’s seasonal tricks;

Summer, Fall, and Winter and Spring,
the tilt of the Earth is a wonderful thing!
