“What are you afraid of?”
said the girl to her reflection.

Is it threat of failure
or perhaps social rejection?

She stared into the misty eyes
that looked right back at her

and found in them an answer
as their tears began to blur.

The answer to her question
it was plain for her to see

was she is letting fear control
who she was going to be.

It’s hard to muster courage
and put on a brave new face

but when it comes down to it
it’s the fear you must replace.

She wiped her eyes and dried her cheeks
and paused for one last stare;

her eyes this time were stronger and
she knew that she could dare.

She turned around and took a breath
and then she stepped away.

She put her best foot forward
to go face a brand new day.

It wasn’t always easy and
sometimes things fell apart,

she made a few mistakes
and put the horse before the cart,

but in the end, she learned that
everyone will make mistakes

and fear of this should never
keep from giving what it takes.

So turn around just like she did
and leave your fears behind;

most of what will hold you back
is only in your mind.

Extras: I love the confident look Zach was able to capture for our heroine. She doesn’t look like she has much to worry about as she meets the challenges of her day. That’s how it should be for all of us.  —Cary
